Hastings Castle, can be seen on the town's West Hill. Its famous 'whispering dungeon' is still intact and there's a special audio-visual display 'the 1066 Story' which captures the bloody thrills of the invasion that led to the creation of the castle.

Hastings Castle is an obvious place to go if you want to find out more about the Battle of Hastings and the events of 1066 (NB: Norman castles are on the Year Seven history national curriculum). It was built by William the Conqueror following his victory at Battle, eight miles away. However, those children who need a bit of mystery and imagination to make their history palatable may be more intrigued by the mysterious whispering dungeons. Discovered in 1870, they have idiosyncratic acoustics that make even a whisper seem to echo through them. Admission: adults pounds 3.20, children pounds 2.10, family ticket (two adults, two children) pounds 9.50 (01424 781111; www.hastings.uk.net).
